In his sculptures and drawings, Thomas Lerooy (*1981 in Roeselare) conjures up a fantastical world that takes spectators to the intimate frontiers of humanity, probing the dark areas and the flaws that define man's mental and physical limits. Each work evokes metaphysical questions as the artist offers his richly ironic explorations of themes such as creation, duality, captivity, transitoriness, and sexuality. Lerooy's drawings celebrate an aesthetic tradition reaching back to Leonardo da Vinci, but also recall the vanitas paintings of the seventeenth century melded with the grotesque and macabre humor of James Ensor. In his sculptures, the artist reveals his great fascination for the monumental tradition of sculpture and the meaning of "the aura" around art. Style and technique are handled in a perfectionist and mannerist way with an eye for detail and proportion.

Nasi per l'arte is not about noses. But how can we say that, when noses of all shapes and sizes will accompany you on your visit? The nose itself, the nose as a form, is not the essence of the curatorial concept. Is a nose just a nose? René Magritte would ask. The exhibition Nasi per l'arte was born from the encounter between two curatorial noses belonging to Joanna De Vos and Melania Rossi. We met many years ago and found that our noses for art were connected somehow. The title of the show indicates that both our lives have always been directed toward - indeed dedicated to - art. The nose is a navigator, guiding us through life; a delicate vehicle that detects and determines. It narrows and dilates at the same time, creating circular communication between the inner and the outer world. Curious self-portraits, drawings, paintings, figurative and abstract sculpture, sculptural installations, reanimated cinema, video works, photographs, artworks that revive tradition and mythology or inquire into the human condition-- these are the fragrances of the exhibition. Their perfume spreads through the rooms of the elegant Palazzo Merulana, wafting past the pieces in its wonderful permanent collection. The most beautiful thing that could happen at Nasi per l'arte would be for all the artworks to breathe as one, creating a meeting that generates new meanings and new feelings. Two noses got together and now, with nostrils open wide, they sincerely hope you will enjoy experiencing their and your noses for art.

BXL Universel presents a subjective portrait of the bustling city that is the Belgian capital, through archive documents, films, photographs and creations by artists who live and work there. BXL UNIVERSEL is a story where opposites meet, sensibilities collide and humour and seriousness interact within a celebratory structure. The project captures the diversity and uniqueness of this bilingual city where the dialect embodies a wonderful Melting Pot, a tasty mix of French and Flemish. The symbol of this city of folklore is "Manneken-Pis", a chubby boy who urinates, a comical incarnation of a zest for life. A city of contrasts, symbolic of the surrealist spirit, it continually challenges the confines of seriousness, enchanting us while annoying us. BXL UNIVERSEL presents approaches as different as the Weltmaschine (World Machine) by Franz Gselmann inspired by the Atomium, a life's art (Kurt Ryslavy), art embodying the sharing of an ecological conscience (Lise Duclaux), the subjective vision of an image of the city (Pieter Geenen), installations (Charlemagne Palestine, Kendell Geers), photography so close to us that it becomes universal (Vincen Beeckman) and more. --

Francis Alys, Philip Aguirre y Otegui, Fred Bervoets, Michaël Borremans, Berlinde De Bruyckere, Kendell Geers, Gideon Kiefer, Sofie Muller, Otobong Nkanga, Luc Tuymans, Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven.
